I have spent many years experimenting with eyeshadow primers to discover formulas that smooth lids, enhance color, and keep shadow secure from humidity, hot days, and late nights. A good primer converts powdery fallout into rich payoff and keeps creasing at bay on oily or hooded lids, so you achieve perfect eye looks without incessant retouching.
Here I present hands-on critiques of reliable primers that I have used myself. I mention texture, how they work on mattes and shimmers, how long they last, and the skin or lid type they work best on.

I turn to Urban Decay's original Primer Potion when I desire effortless blending and long-lasting wear. The light, somewhat tacky texture grabs shadow and deepens pigments without being heavy. It's my favorite for shimmer-laden looks because it makes metallics pop and stay crease-free. On combo lids it helps prevent oil breakthrough for the better part of the day.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance provides me with a sheer, long-wearing base that battles oil and won't move under cream or glitter shadows. It glides on easily with a convenient doe-foot and dries down so shadows smooth on evenly. I love it under warm-hued palettes where it keeps shade intense without changing color.

Smashbox's 24-hour primer is a dermatologically-tested formula that visibly deepens color and provides a silky surface. I love how it feels moisturizing on the lids while providing earnest staying power on all-day shoots and parties. It also layers successfully and prevents transfer, which makes it a trusty companion for long-lasting wear.

NARS' smudge-proof base is a lightweight, quick-drying formula that delivers a matte finish and ensures shadow remains crisp. I prefer to use it on graphic liners and cut-crease styles as it sharpens edges and does not smudge, even after many hours of wear in bright lights.

MAC's Painterly Paint Pot serves also as a cream shadow and primer. I apply it when I desire a neutral background and added opacity, it applies well and extends wear, particularly under thick pigment and foiled shadow. It's great for brightening lid shadows prior to coloring.

Benefit's Stay Don't Stray is a sheer, effortless beige-colored primer that smoothes and sets concealer and eyeshadow. It's great for travel and is effective when I'm in need of a quick base that also corrects subtle discoloration on the lids. I tend to use it when I'm traveling light and need a product that does double duty.

For an affordable waterproof solution, NYX Proof It! is a consistent performer. I applied it when I anticipated sweating or rain and found that my shadows stayed resistant to creasing and vibrantly lasted longer than without a primer. It's also a go-to when I'm testing bright colors that are prone to fading.

Milani's Stay Put primer caught me off guard with its silky, creamy texture and a good eight-hour wear. It smooths the lid, reduces fine lines, and adds pigment payoff without pilling. At the price point, it rivals pricier competitors in terms of hold and finish.
I used each primer on fresh lids, repeated the same palettes and applied them through eight-to-twelve hour days involving humidity and rubbing. I critiqued based on blendability, color intensification, creasing, transfer resistance, and removability. I also observed how well each primer got along with both matte and shimmer types and whether or not there was any color shift. (Test method modified to reflect daily and editorial use scenarios.)
If you desire eyeshadows that are unique and do not have one sized-fits-all pick, Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion and Too Faced Shadow Insurance are gorgeously balanced for most skin types and finishes. For editorial-level precision grab NARS or MAC's Paint Pot; for extended sweat-proof wear use Smashbox, NYX, or Milani. Benefit is phenomenal as an instant, corrective primer that also serves as concealer on the lid. Any of these primers will take your eye makeup to the next level, choose by finish, wear-time requirements, and if you want a liquid or cream base.
